"It's just quicker if I do it myself." [And why this is stopping you from progressing your career]

I regularly hear this exact phrase when coaching people on partnership track in the professions.
​
And every single time I hear it, I ask the same question:
​
​"Is it though?"​
​
Because here's what's actually happening. You're not saving time by doing it yourself.

You're just avoiding three very specific fears.​
​
1️⃣ they won't get it done in time, and you'll end up redoing it yourself at midnight the night before the deadline.
​
(And possibly get the wrath of your significant other half because you’ve left them to deal with the kids on their own AGAIN)
​
2️⃣ they'll blow the budget, you'll have to write it off, and then explain to the partner why the margin on this matter is rubbish.
​
3️⃣ the work will come back wrong, you'll have to fix it anyway, and you've wasted everyone's time.
​
So you tell yourself it's quicker to just do it yourself.

And you stay trapped in the weeds whilst watching your peers (apparently) effortless find the time to do all the other stuff that helps progress your career to partner.
​
But here's the thing about those three fears. They're all completely valid. And they're all completely solvable.
​
You just need to know how to set up the delegation properly in the first place.
​
